Avon lodge is rated as Good overall by the CQC in all five categories – safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing or personal care as a single package under one contractual agreement. We carried out an inspection of the home to check how the home was being managed. This was because the provider had employed several registered managers since the last inspection who had not remained in post. This was in relation to infection prevention and control measures and how this was managed. We spoke with the manager, admin assistant, three nurses, three staff and five people who lived at the home. We considered all this information to help us to make a judgement about the home. We looked at a range of records relating to the management of the home.

There were effective systems in place to monitor the quality of care that people received. Staff felt valued and listened to; people and their relatives also confirmed they were engaged with the service and their feedback was sought about the care at the home. The operations manager and staff worked with health and social care providers to drive improvement and to deliver an effective service. The registered manager and senior staff were respected and demonstrated good leadership and management. They had an open, honest and transparent management style.

Avon Lodge is an attractive and spacious care home situated in Kingswood on the eastern edge of Bristol. The staff are friendly and welcoming and provide lots of support to residents. The newly decorated communal areas inside the home provide a lovely area for residents to spend time. Appropriate recruitment checks took place before staff started work and there were enough staff available to meet people's care and support needs. There were procedures in place to reduce the risk of infections and COVID- 19.

Staff had the right skills and training to support people appropriately. People received their medicines when they required them and in a safe manner. Staff received training and guidance to make sure they remained competent to handle people's medicines. We involve residents in the planning of our weekly activities timetables and offer one-to-one bespoke and tailored opportunities as requested. Daily activities and entertainment are a core part of our quality care at Avon Lodge. The home had a manager who was registered with the Care Quality Commission.
